Uganda’s men’s national basketball team, the Silverbacks, endured a tough start to AfroBasket 2025, falling 53–88 to the Lions of Senegal in Group D’s opening game of the 31st edition of the tournament.
Luanda, August 12 — Senegal, fresh from an intensive training camp in Europe, outclassed Uganda, who had prepared for 10 days in South Africa but entered the competition with only 10 registered players instead of the full 12.
The short-handed Silverbacks were outscored in every quarter and struggled to match lions’ pace and physicality.
Uganda handed tournament debuts to youngsters Nassef Lubowa, Tejan Joel Rugette, and Jacksen Moni, the latter replacing the absent Ismael Wainright.

While the rookies showed promise, Uganda’s lack of depth proved costly, with Senegal’s bench contributing 52 points compared to Uganda’s 13. The West Africans also dominated the paint, outscoring Uganda 50–32 inside.
Makytar Gueye and Jean Jacques Boissy came off the bench to lead Senegal with 16 points each for coach Ngagne De Sagane’s side. John Deng Geu top-scored for Uganda with 17 points.

The Silverbacks will face Mali in their second game on August 14, while Senegal meet Egypt.
