The Rwanda men’s national basketball team has departed Kigali for Moçâmedes, Angola, ahead of the 31st edition of the FIBA AfroBasket 2025.
The team is traveling in groups, with the first group having departed Kigali International Airport at 2 a.m. on Friday, August 8.
Rwanda concluded its training camp on Wednesday with a 79–75 win over Libya, after taking the first game 71–65.
Head coach Dr. Cheikh Sarr will lead the team, assisted by Yves Murenzi, Sanny Niyomugabo, and veteran guard Kenny Gasana.
This marks Rwanda’s seventh AfroBasket appearance since their debut in 2007. Despite consistent participation, they have yet to reach the quarterfinals, with their best finish being 9th place in 2009.
Currently ranked 93rd in the world and 15th in Africa, Rwanda has been drawn into a tough Group A alongside 2021 runners-up Côte d’Ivoire, semifinalists Cape Verde, and in-form DR Congo, who stuned South Sudan in the qualifiers.
Group A and Group C games will take place in Moçâmedes, the capital of Namibe Province. The remaining members of the Rwandan delegation are scheduled to travel later today.
Rwanda will open their AfroBasket 2025 campaign against Côte d’Ivoire on August 13, followed by a clash with DR Congo on August 15, before concluding the group stage against Cape Verde on August 17.
Rwanda will play all three matches at the Pavilhão Multiusos Welwitschia Mirabilis in Namibe.
