Police Volleyball Club teams in both the men’s and women’s categories clinched the 2025 Liberation Cup titles after defeating their archrivals APR in the finals held on Sunday, July 6, at Petit Stade in Kigali.

In the finals, Police Volleyball Club edged APR in five sets, while Police WVC defended their title with a repeat win over APR.

The third edition of the Liberation Cup ran for three days, featuring the top four men’s and women’s teams from the 2025 National League and bringing the local volleyball season to a close.

The semifinals, played on Friday and Saturday, saw APR eliminate Kepler and Police edge REG in the men’s category.

In the women’s bracket, Police knocked out Kepler while APR saw off RRA—setting up all-Police vs. APR finals in both categories.

The finals lived up to the hype, with Rwanda’s top security institutions exhibiting high-level volleyball and intense rivalry.

In the women’s final, Christian Hutimimana’s Police Volleyball Club came from a set down to defeat APR 3-1 (18-25, 25-10, 25-19, 25-19), capturing their third consecutive Liberation Cup title.

The victory capped off a dominant season in which Police WVC completed a treble, having already won the National League and the Genocide Memorial Tournament (GMT).

In the men’s final, Fred Musoni’s Police Volleyball Club secured their first-ever Liberation Cup after outlasting APR 3-2 in a back-and-forth five-set thriller (25-22, 22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-10).

The triumph restored pride for the law enforcers following setbacks in the Zone V Championship, National League, and GMT.

Kepler finished third in both the men’s and women’s categories.

The Liberation Cup, organized by the Rwanda Volleyball Federation (FRVB), is held annually to commemorate July 4—Kwibohora (Liberation Day).

The date marks the end of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi, when the Armée Patriotique Rwandaise (APR) captured Kigali and brought the genocide to a halt.

While the Liberation Cup concludes Rwanda’s volleyball season, several clubs are expected to resume competition next month at the KAVC Memorial Tournament in Kampala, Uganda.
