Friendlies: Mukura fall to Gasogi, APR beat Bugesera, Musanze and Marines had a 7-goal thriller game

In preparation for the Rwanda Premier League, which is set to begin on December 4, 2020, teams continue to prepare by playing friendlies.

Today in Bugesera, Gasogi United hosted Mukura and beat them 1-0. Bertrand Iradukunda scored the 50th-minute lone goal of the match, Iradukunda signed for Gasogi from Mukura last season where he scored for the latter 12 goals. This was Mukura’s first game since sports resumption in Rwanda, while Gasogi was playing their fifth match.

In previous matches, Gasogi defeated Etincelles 1-0, lost to the Marines 2-1, lost to Gorilla FC 3-1 and drew 1-1 with Vision FC.

In other matches, at Kigali Stadium, APR FC warned Bugesera FC by beating them three goals to nil with a brace from new striker Yannick Bizimana before Danny Usengimana converted a Penalty.

In the north of the country, Musanze FC hosted Marines FC in seven-goal thriller game. Musanze won the game 4-3. These teams played another match last Sunday at Umuganda Stadium, and Marines were beaten 3-2.

All these games are being played behind closed doors to prevent the spread of the Corona Virus.

Vipers SC home grounds St Mary’s Stadium Kitende ranked level 2 after FUFA stadium classification list is released.

Football governing body of Uganda FUFA has released a list showing how different stadia countrywide rank and St Mary’s Stadium Kitende is the only with level 2.

The stadium is located in Kitende off Entebbe road and is home to 2019/2020 league title holders Vipers SC. It artificial turf establishment that was built by club patron and former FUFA president Lawrence Mulindwa.

The football body in September this year held a congress where it forged a Stadium Inspection Committee. The quality of the stadium or the playing field is a huge factor that determines greatly the performance in a match with issues ranging from player safety and security at the venue. The committee was established as an Adhoc committee by the FUFA Emergency Committee.

As the 2020/2021 League campaign kick-off dates draw closer, it’s of great essence that the competition venues meet the standards to contain the rules and regulation set for the continued resumption of competitive sports in the country.

Upcoming league fixtures are expected to be released anytime next week.

Senegal National Basketball team final squad to travel to Kigali has been named.

In this squad, the USA based great players who were shortlisted in Pre-selection namely Gorgui Dieng, Tacko Fall and Georges Niang are not in the list of 14 players named by Boniface Ndong.

The final list of the 12 players who will take part in this competition will be published at a later date, due to FIBA‘s health protocol linked to the COVID test.

KCB Nkumba-A’s Grace Akiror earns a huge accolade form the Uganda Sports Press Association. 

Grace Akiror was awarded the accolade of Best Female Volleyball Player Of the Year at the recently concluded Uganda Sports Press Association USPA Awards. She plays for the defending champions KCB Nkumba-A a team from the education institution Nkumba University.

She is a Ugandan female volleyball player born in Bukedea district. She is an Outside Hitter standing at 180 cm. She has won 3 titles for her side and has was called to represent her nation for the first time at the Zone 5 All Africa Games Women’s Qualifiers in 2019.

KCB Nkumba-A won the league last year in November after overwhelming KCCA women’s Volleyball club at the playoffs. Grace Akiror was instrumental in guiding her side to winning the league title.

Rwanda’s 2nd division sides Rutsiro FC and Gorilla FC win promotion to play in Premier League come next season.

Rutsiro FC and Gorilla FC got a historical promotion in Rwanda’s top tier league. This comes after the two teams performed well in the semi-finals on Wednesday, November 18, 2020.

In the semi-finals, which took place at Kigali Stadium today, no goals were scored in either match, all the games finished with penalty shootouts, both teams won the promotion to the Premier League for the first time. In particular, the Gorilla FC team that was established in 2019 after the purchase of SEC Academy.

In the first game, Rutsiro drew with Vision FC 0-0, they proceeded to the penalties, Rutsiro FC won 7-6. Another action-packed semifinal followed this match between Etoile de l’est and Gorilla FC. Both teams had an impressive run this season and there is no doubt they were both favorites to get promotions together. However, according to the schedule they had to face each other in the semifinal. After the goalless draw in regular time, Gorilla FC edged Etoile de l’est on penalty shoutout (4-3) to get the maiden promotion. Etoile de l’est missed out another opportunity to play in the Premier league they last played in 1998/1999 season.

On Saturday, November 21, 2020, Gorilla FC and Rutsiro FC will lock horns for the final of the Rwanda 2nd Division League 2019/2020 season.

Morans’ will miss out on the service of Joel Awich in the 2021 AfroBasket Qualifiers window scheduled for Kigali next week.

Foreign-base player Joel Awich who plays in France will not play for his nation in the 2021 AfroBasket Qualifiers window scheduled for the end of November in Kigali, Rwanda.

Joel Awich is a centre/forward who plays for French side Dax Gamade.

Team head coach Cliff Owuor yesterday confirmed that due to Visa matters and the stick COVID-19 restrictions, the 27-year-old will not play for the Morans in Kigali.

“The fact that Awich can’t make it for the championships has now reduced the number of diaspora players I was relying on. His presence at the centre would have been key,” Owour said.

Joel Awich is one of the key players that the head coach was relying on for the completion. However, all is not bad as he has assured that he will feature in the February window.

Kenya is together with Senegal, Angola and Mozambique in Group B. The Kigali window will start on Wednesday 25th next weekend run through to the 29th.

2021 Afrobasket Qualifiers: Nigeria’s Rasheed Sulaimon will not feature in the Kigali window.

Nigerian shooting guard who currently plays in Spain for Casademont Zaragoza, won’t participate in 2021 Afrobasket Qualifiers Group D first window scheduled in Kigali due to an injury that will rule him out of the court for up to 8 weeks. He has a torn muscle in his left abdomen and leg wound.

Sulaimon was named in the 20-man roster announced by Coach Mike Brown early this month to feature in the games scheduled from November 25th. Ike Diogu as the team captain will lead Nigeria D’Tigers. Also in the list called, the 2015 NBA winner with Golden State Warriors, Festus Ezeli will be in the squad that will travel to Kigali alongside the former Detroit Pistons, Mike Gbinije.

The Tigers will have to be in Kigali before November 23rd so that they can have the final training Sessions before they face South Sudan, Rwanda and Mali on 26th, 27th and 28th November respectively.

2021 Afrobasket Qualifiers: South Sudan has been handed a chance to complete the Group D

Following the decision by Algeria National team to withdraw from the Afrobasket Qualifiers window 1 scheduled in Rwanda, FIBA Opted to replace Algeria with South Sudan as they came second in the wild cards tournament organized in Cameroon last month.

South Sudan bright stars started in the Preliminary qualifiers held in Nairobi, January 2020. They finished second behind Kenya and lost the opportunity to enter the Groups in Qualifiers. Later in October this year, FIBA Africa organized another mini tournament in Cameroon between 23rd and 25th. South Sudan were given the invitation to this wild card tournament unfortunately, they finished second again and miss out on the opportunity to complete the Group E.

In recent days, Algeria pulled out of Group D due to the COVID 19 constraint to bring the foreign-based players into the country and the local players could not practice therefore through the federation president Rabah Bouarifi, they decided to withdraw. Which gives South Sudan another prospect to complete Group D.

South Sudan will join the hosts Rwanda, Mali and the giants Nigeria. The Bright Stars of South Sudan will play the first game on November 26, 2020, against Nigeria.

Rwanda and Cape Verde have all failed to score in the doubleheader against each other.

Rwanda and Cape Verde shared the spoils again in Kigali in the second leg that Rwanda played over 60 minutes with a man down following the second booking of midfielder Ally Niyonzima.

Amavubi were at home hoping for the first three points of the  AFCON Qualifiers campaign, however, it ended up with no goal scored and Rwanda is the only country to have not scored in these Qualifiers. In this match, Rwanda Head coach, Vincent Mashami remained with his lineup from the previous game in Praia while Pedro Brito, the head coach of Cape Verde made three changes from the previous lineup.

After 28 minutes of the game, Rwandan midfielder Ally Niyonzima was shown a second yellow card following the first he received in the 12th minute, it was a foul that some observers said the referee was too harsh. Niyonzima left the pitch and match continue with 10 vs 11.

The second half started with a change on the side of Rwanda, Mashami dropping the striker Kagere and entered midfielder Kevin Muhire. Things got more than worse at the 56th minute when the striker Tuyisenge got injured, Mashami was forced to make another change and introduce Ernest Sugira who didnt play the first leg match because of injury. 5 minutes later, The Rwandan Goalie, Kwizera kept Amavubi in the match once again with a one on one save against Lisandro Semedo. The match ended with no other scoring opportunity on both sides.

Mozambique kept his second place in this group despite losing at home against the leaders Cameroon. Cape Verde are third behind Mozambique both sharing 4 points while Rwanda is still trailing at the bottom with 2 points.

Ntibazonkiza Saidi’s brace handed Burundi the first 3 points of the 2021 AFCON Qualifiers campaign.

Today, 4 days after Burundi drew with Mauritania in Nouakchott, the swallows of Burundi have defeated Mauritania 3 goals to 1 with 2 goals scored by striker Ntibazonkiza Saidi in a game played at Intwari stadium in Bujumbura.

In this game, Burundian head coach Jimmy Ndayizeye made four changes to the 11 players who started the first leg match played in Nouakchott. The head coach opted to sit Fredric Nsabiyumva and shifted Yussuf Nyange from the midfield to central defence, a position he plays in his current club, Yeni Malatyaspor. The coach also included Blaise Bigirimana and Saido Berahino in the starting lineup replacing Cedric Amiss and Fiston Abdul.

Ntibazonkiza Saidi opened the score early in the game following a good combination from Berahino and Weymans in the 6th minute. Weymans played his debut game for his nation last week in Nouakchott. Weymans who made an assist for this goal also played his first game in Burundi today.

27 minutes into the game, Mauritania through forward Mamadou  Niass Ndioko levelled the score to bring the visitors back into the game.

One minute after the break, an acrobatic diving header from Youssuf Ndayishimiye popularly known as Nyange put Burundi in the lead from a free-kick delivered by former Newcastle United midfielder Gael Bigirimana.

Ntibazonkiza Saidi doubled his tally for the day through yet another properly delivered free-kick. This makes it 4 goals in 3 games after his return to the national team. Saidi was on the scoresheet last week on Wednesday against the same opponent.

After this score, Burundi moves up to 3rd place with 4 points and a point behind Mauritania. In the remaining fixtures of Group E, in March 2021 Burundi will host the Central African Republic and visit Morocco. the top two teams in this group will qualify for the 2021 AFCON that will be played in Cameroon come 2022.

Elsewhere, Kenya gave in to Comoros in a match that ended 2-1. The Harambee Stars are in 3rd place with 3 points behind Egypt who have a game in hand with 5 points. Comoros leads this Group G of AFCON 2021 Qualifiers table while with 8 points while Togo trails at the bottom with only 1 point.
