Silverbacks Coach George Galanopolous – ‘No opponent should be taken for granted’

The Uganda National Basketball Team Coach George Galanopolous has made emphasis about his opponents in Group E.

The Silverbacks are in training camp in Egypt as they prepare for contention against opponents Egypt, Morocco, and Cape Verde in the AfroBasket 2021 Qualifiers

Coach George Galanopolous has expressed confidence in his team saying, “Camp is going well. We almost have our full team, we are almost at full strength. The guys have been playing hard that have been here over the last five days and we are looking forward to it.”

The squad is a little bit deeper, we have a couple of returning players both locally and foreign-based. A couple of new faces that are foreign-based as well. So, this is the first we have had this specific group. We feel that the bench is a little bit deeper,” he added.

He also mentioned, “I think every single game is going to be tough, starting with Egypt that is not an easy game especially with the roster that they brought in, one of the better teams in Africa on paper. Morocco has always been rock solid and Cape Verde very obviously is on the rise as well. So, no opponent, and every game is important. So we are going to approach each game as such and hopefully, we can come up on the right side.”

The tournament begins next week with Uganda playing Egypt, Morocco and Cape Verde on November 27th, 28th and 29th respectively.

Uganda Volleyball Federation Elective Congress Expected Early Next Year

The Uganda Volleyball Federation UVF released a circular inviting all eligible candidates for the Elective Congress set for January 31st, 2021.

In a circular addressed to all UVF affiliates, the volleyball governing body called for interested persons to pick nomination forms for the 8 seats available in the UVF Elective Positions.

Post For the 2021 Elective Congress.

  • President
  • 1st Vise President
  • 2nd Vise President
  • General Secretary
  • Assistant General Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Club Representatives (3)
  • District Associations Representative (3)

The circular stated that any individual interested in any of the posts is required to submit the form(s) 14 days before the date of the General Assembly.

It should be noted that unlike football that is scheduled to KickOff early next month, competitive volleyball organized by the governing body may not happen this year as the guidelines set by the government for competitions activities to resume, mainly the cost of testing players cannot be met by clubs later on the federation.

Uganda was set to host a continental tournament in December but the governing body CAVB later announced that all activities scheduled for 2020 will be postponed to 2021 on dates to be announced.

At the moment the only activity by Uganda Volleyball Federation expected to happen is the UVF Elective Congress in January.

Owing to imapact COVID-19 on sports, it is coming to close to a full year with no league soccer in the country.

In September, the government lifted a ban on sports and thereafter the league was scheduled to Kickoff on 17th October. This was later postponed to 20th November and now 3rd December.

Is 12 days good enough time for the remaining clubs to submit the minimum requirements to get a full license so that we could see the light again. Or is there going to be another postponement.
