Volleyball League: APR WVC Ends RRA’s Winning Streak.

APR WVC
APR WVC ended Rwanda Revenue Authority’s (RRA) unbeaten run in the 2025 Rwanda Volleyball National League with a four-set victory, allowing Police WVC to take control of the league standings.

Armée Patriotique Rwandaise Women Volleyball Club (APR WVC) ended RRA’s impressive ten-game winning streak on February 14 at Petit Stade.

Coach Peter Kamasa’s side had lost to RRA in the first leg, but this rematch offered the perfect chance for revenge against the league’s only unbeaten team.

Missing their first-choice setter, Jennifer Tembo, RRA coach Elie Mutabazi relied on Denyse Uwingabire, but the team struggled to maintain the momentum they had built since the league’s kickoff on October 18.

The army team came out strong, winning the first two sets (25-18, 25-20) and putting RRA on the back foot.

APR WVC
Captain Valentine Munezero and her teammates made RRA work hard from the start.

The tax collectors battled to take the third set 28-26, but APR proved too strong, sealing the win with a 25-17 fourth set.

With this win, APR ties RRA at 28 points but trails on set ratio, while Police WVC tops the table with a 10-1 record and 30 points.

In another fixture, EAUR edged Kepler in a thrilling five-set encounter. The two university teams are battling for the fourth playoff spot, as the top three—Police, RRA, and APR—have already secured their places in the postseason.

CAVB Zone V Club Championship
Eighteen volleyball teams from six countries, including defending champions Rwandan Police VC and Kenya Pipeline, have confirmed their participation in the CAVB Zone V Club Championship, set to take place in 12 days in Kampala, Uganda.

The highly anticipated tournament is scheduled for February 26 to March 4 at Lugogo Indoor Stadium in Kampala.

With registration still ongoing, Uganda leads the women’s competition with five teams: KCB Nkumba, VVC, KCCA, Ndejje Elites, and Sport-S.

Defending champions Kenya Pipeline, South Sudan’s Cobra, Rwanda Police, and Tanzania Prisons join them, bringing the women’s teams to nine.

Uganda also has a strong presence in the men’s category, with KAVC, Nemo Stars, Sport-S, and UCU Doves representing the host nation. Other confirmed teams include Burundi’s Rukinzo and Muzinga, Tanzania’s Jeshi Stars, South Sudan’s Cobra, and Rwandan Police VC, the reigning champions.

Although the CAVB Zone V Club Championship is meant to be an annual event, last year’s edition was skipped.

The previous tournament was held in November 2023 at Kigali’s BK Arena, where Kenya Pipeline dominated the women’s final on November 19, sweeping Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) in straight sets (25-20, 25-23, 25-18).

In the men’s competition, Rwandan Police VC rallied after losing the first set to defeat Uganda’s Sport-S 3-1 (20-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-17).

Crispin Ntateteri and Rose Magoi won MVP honors for men and women, respectively.

CAVB Zone V comprises 11 countries, and with registration still open, the list of 18 confirmed teams is not final—more teams are expected to join the competition.

Volleytines Party and Playoff Battles: What to Expect This Friday Night.

Volleytines
The local governing body for volleyball and national league regulator, FRVB, is hosting the thrilling Round 10 matches on Friday night, coinciding with Valentine’s Day in an event named “Volleytines.”

As the league enters its final four rounds, teams are battling for playoff slots, making this stage crucial for title contenders.

To enhance the experience for volleyball enthusiasts, FRVB is set to host special “Volleytines” parties at Petit Stade, creating a unique blend of sports and love.

Volleytines—a fusion of volleyball and Valentine’s Day—features an exciting lineup of matches.

In the women’s category, Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) will face off against APR, while Kepler takes on EAUR. In the men’s category, APR will battle REG, and KVC will challenge RP Ngoma at Petit Stade and NPC Gymnasium.

Speaking to FRVB’s communications officer, Amon B. Nuwamanya, he confirmed that the league schedule was not altered to align with Valentine’s Day but rather coincidentally falls on this special occasion.

“We have had volleyball games on Friday nights since the start of the season; we didn’t move our games to coincide with Valentine’s Day,” said Nuwamanya.

However, he hinted at special surprises for attendees: “We plan to make this Friday night special. An undisclosed artist, along with DJs, will entertain the volleyball lovers.”

On the women’s side, RRA—the only unbeaten team this season—looks to extend its dominance by handing defending champions APR their fourth loss of the campaign.

APR, coached by Peter Kamasa, has had a challenging season, losing twice to Police and once to RRA in the first leg.

The army team must respond on Friday to boost team morale and secure a favorable playoff position, as they have mathematically booked a place in the playoffs.

In the men’s category, the high-stakes clash between APR and REG is crucial, as both teams are still vying for playoff spots. Currently ranked third and fourth, they will be battling for crucial points to move closer to league leaders Police.

APR has an opportunity to claim second place if they overcome REG in this decisive encounter.

The Rwanda Volleyball National League has established itself as the premier Friday night sporting event, with Petit Stade becoming the home of volleyball action.

Volleytines tickets are available on Ticqet for 5,000 FRW, with an early bird price of 3,000 FRW.

Cole Elliot Lamar Drops 26 Points on His Patriots Debut

Cole Elliot Lamar
Patriots' Cole Elliot Lamar scored a game-high 26 points on his debut.
Patriots BBC’s new signing, Cole Elliot Lamar, delivered a game-high 26 points, leading his team to an 86-78 victory over Tigers and helping them return to winning ways in the Rwanda Basketball League.

On February 7 at LDK Gymnasium, Lamar led the Patriots to a crucial win over Tigers, helping them rebound from their loss to UGB. The American guard, who joined the team this week, quickly proved his value

The Patriots desperately needed a point guard following the departure of William Perry, and Lamar’s debut suggested he could fill that void effectively.

Lamar shot 8-of-19 from the field, including 4-of-11 from behind the arc, and converted 6-of-7 free throws to tally a game-high 26 points.

For Tigers, Fiston Irutingabo led the way with 15 points, followed by Pitchou Manga (14) and Nickelberry David Emre (13).

The win over Tigers helped the Patriots recover from a 73-69 defeat against UGB, following their dominant 89-64 victory over Azomco in the season opener.

With a 2-1 record, Patriots currently sit in third place behind the undefeated APR and REG.

APR Stun Kepler 105-80 to Maintain Perfect Start in Rwanda Basketball League 2025.

Rwanda Basketball League
Aliou Diarra Fadiala's 27 points powered APR to a dominant win over Kepler in the Rwanda Basketball League.
APR Basketball Club dominated Kepler with a commanding 105-80 victory in the Rwanda Basketball League, extending their perfect 4-0 record and securing the top spot.

A decisive 15-point advantage in the second quarter paved the way for APR’s triumph in the game played on Thursday, February 6, at Petit Stade.

The back-to-back defending champions led Kepler by nine points in the first quarter (26-17). However, a dominant second quarter (37-22) widened the gap significantly, making it difficult for Kepler to stage a comeback.

In a high-scoring game filled with three-pointers, Kepler managed to edge APR in the third quarter (24-23), momentarily halting APR’s momentum as they rotated their entire roster.

By the final quarter, APR had the win in sight, letting their bench play more. They outscored Kepler 19-17 in the last period, sealing the game at 105-80.

All APR players saw at least 10 minutes of action, with Ali Kazingufu being the only one who didn’t score. Aliou Diarra led the game with 27 points on an efficient 11-14 shooting, while Osborn Shema recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Kepler, missing two key players—Olivier Turatsinze and Chad Bowie Jordan, both former league MVPs—relied heavily on Imani Rutayisire and Herve Irakoze.

The duo combined for 40 points, scoring 20 each, but their efforts weren’t enough to prevent Kepler from suffering their second consecutive league defeat.

APR shot 43-75 from the field, including 10-31 from beyond the arc, while Kepler went 29-74, making 11-28 from three-point range. APR dominated the paint with 66 points compared to Kepler’s 32.

With the win, APR maintains their perfect 4-0 start, followed by REG at 3-0. Kepler now stands at 1-2.

Both teams will return to action on Sunday, February 9, at LDK, with APR facing UGB and Kepler taking on Espoir.

Uganda’s Gazelles Crush Burundi to Reach the Women’s AfroBasket 2025 Qualifiers Zonal Final

Uganda defeated Burundi to finish the FIBA Women's AfroBasket 2025 Zone V Qualifiers group stage with a 3-1 record.
Uganda’s Gazelles crushed Burundi 66-30 in the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2025 Qualifiers, finishing the group stage with a 3-1 record and securing a place in the winner-takes-all Zonal final.

Coming off a crucial 89-63 victory against South Sudan, the Gazelles capitalized on facing a weaker Burundi side to seal a top-two finish in the group.

Burundi started strong, leading the first quarter 17-14, thanks to Ines Nezerwa’s seven points.

However, Coach Nicholas Natuhereza’s squad dominated defensively, limiting Burundi to just five points per quarter for the rest of the game and winning the last three quarters (15-4, 17-5, 20-4) to seal a commanding 36-point victory.

With the game under control, Coach Natuhereza rotated his squad, resting key players Paige Robinson, Hope Akello, Shakirah Nanvumbya, and captain Jane Asinde—who all logged over 33 minutes in the previous win against South Sudan.

No player exceeded 28 minutes, allowing Jamila Nansinkombi and Melissa Akullu, who didn’t feature against Kenya, valuable playing time.

Both players seized the opportunity, delivering double-digit performances. Zama led all scorers with 14 points and six rebounds, while Akullu contributed 12 points and seven boards.

Nezerwa, aka Giti, led Burundi with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Uganda’s victory secures their spot in the final, likely against Egypt, the only team to defeat them in this campaign. A win for Egypt over South Sudan today would set up the final with Uganda on February 8 at Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall.

The Zone V winner will earn a spot in the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2025 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

Uganda’s Comeback Falls Short Against Egypt in Women’s AfroBasket Qualifiers

Women's AfroBasket Qualifiers
The Uganda National Basketball Team, the Gazelles, fought hard to overcome a 14-point deficit, but foul trouble proved costly as they fell to Egypt 62-65 in their second game of the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Qualifiers.

The February 4 match at Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall saw Uganda welcome back Jamila Nansikombi after five years, though she had little impact after missing the first game due to visa issues.

The Gazelles struggled early, trailing 14-23 at the end of the first quarter, with the deficit growing to 14 points in the first two minutes of the second. However, Nicholas Natuhereza’s side mounted a strong comeback, narrowing the gap to just one point at halftime (32-33).

Egypt took control in the third quarter, limiting Uganda to just nine points. The Gazelles scored their first basket after six minutes, finishing the period behind 41-46.

Jane Asinde and Hope Akello led Uganda’s final-quarter charge, claiming their first lead at 51-50 after six minutes. However, Akello fouled out, and Nanvubya was in foul trouble, allowing Egypt, already in the bonus, to capitalize and regain momentum.

With 1:25 remaining, the game stood tied at 59-59, but Hala Elshaarawy and Farida Abdelnabi sank back-to-back layups to give Egypt a four-point cushion.

Uganda’s Robinson Paige responded with two free throws, but Elshaarawy’s late layup restored a two-possession lead with 19 seconds left.

Asinde had a chance to cut the deficit but converted only one of two free throws, sealing the 62-65 loss.

Uganda’s Robinson Paige topped all scorers with a game-high 24 points in the Women’s AfroBasket Qualifiers against Egypt.
Women's Afrobasket Qualifiers
The experienced Raneem Elgedawy recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds as Egypt narrowly edged Uganda 65-62 in the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Qualifiers.

With this result, the Gazelles sit second in the standings behind undefeated Egypt.

Uganda takes on South Sudan Wednesday in a second-place battle following South Sudan’s win over Kenya.

A victory would improve Uganda’s standing before facing Burundi, the group’s weakest team, with the top two teams battling in a winner-takes-all final for a spot in the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2025.
