UVF ‘In With The New’ As Nasiwu Is Handed Office From Former President Namanda For 2021-2024 Regime

UVF 'In With The New' As Nasiwu Is Handed Office From Former President Namanda

It was a colourful event at the Uganda Olympic Committee when the now-former Board Of Administrators headed by Namanda Hadija handed over to Sadik Nasiwu and his team.

The event was attended by Uganda Volleyball Federation Executives plus a few journalists. The main highlight of the event was the FIVB volleyball cake that new boss Sadik Nasiwu arrived with. This was meant for only the outgoing and incoming officers and invited members of the press were not allowed a piece of what starts the new chapter in Uganda volleyball

This happened a week after the AGM was held at Lugogo Hockey field area where the new Board of Administration was elected by the different affiliates of the federation through their chosen delegates.

“The hand over is a starting point and a continuation of the previous 4 years to the next 4 years. So, it is important and it is also a time of stock-taking to know where exactly you have been and where you are supposed to go and also gives you a starting block where to start from. So, it is a very important activity in the process,” said Nasiwu

“The next 4 years is obviously the development of the game as we have been re-echoing it, we want to develop the game and add on what has been there, we want to go to the grass root of volleyball, we want to go to the schools where we have always got the athletes. We also want to see how we can come out of this lockdown. The sport has been locked down, there are no activities running, the league is not running, most activities on the court are not there, something we want to re-activate and from that, we shall look at the other issues in the process,” added Sadik Nasiwu

“I think I give thanks to God for having been given the opportunity to serve the sports at the helm. It is not something I would say is a piece of cake, it is a lot of hard work, you have to think about the sport. It is a lot of effort to ensure that we are out there afloat. So, it has been a lot of sacrifice from the executive and board. a lot of sacrifices to ensure that we have a lot of exposure for our athletes even with the little resources that we have. I would like to thank the different teams, the clubs, the schools, and the institutions for having worked so hard to ensure that the ball is kept flying. It is a lot of sacrifice from all the different key stakeholders because as everyone knows it, volleyball is a voluntary sport and people invest their money to ensure that they go for championships,” said Namanda Hadija.

Nasiwu emphasized the issue of players being out of action for a very long time and promises that most efforts will be put into seeing the league resume as soon as possible. He also mentioned the requirements needed to host an international event bundled together with the time constraint that led to the decision to drop the U20 Championship. The president said the federation will do its best to see the U20 ladies team participate in the tournament wherever it will be hosted so as to lose double the opportunity.

In a General Assembly Meeting held on Saturday, February 6th, members of the Rwanda Volleyball Federation (FRVB) decided that the 2021-2022 season will serve-off tentatively on March 20, 2021.

During this meeting, which was convened virtually, the rules governing the league for this season were approved after making amendments to it. The league will be played under the format of stages. At each stage, all the teams will have to face each other and each team will have a chance to host its own stage.

The provisional schedule of the competitions has also been approved. The competition will start on March 20, 2021, but it is a matter of changes depending on the government’s protocols to prevent the COVID-19.

The meeting also approved the request of the University of Rwanda, Nyarugenge Campus to become an affiliate of the federation and the team will start in Serie-B of Rwanda Volleyball League. While the IPRC Musanze VC has been promoted to Serie-A as before last season’s halt, the team had the points that allow them to get promoted to the top tier league.

Last season, UTB VC, in the Women’s category won the league after overcoming the good side, APR VC. In the Men’s, Elie Mutabazi’s APR VC were crowned the champions following a well-fought victory against the giants UTB VC. The games in both Women’s and Men’s Categories were played to decisive sets and also played under bubble format due to the country’s current circumstances and measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Burundian Duo Make Bench Debut For Their New Club, Yeni-Malatyaspor

Yeni-Malatyaspor

Yeni-Malatyaspor’s recently two acquisitions Ndizeye and Nshimirimana made a bench debut in their first appearance for the club.

Two Burundian Internationals, Eric Ndizeye from Musongati and Jospin Nshimirimana from Aigle Noir, who signed a three and a half-year deal with Turkey’s top tier league team, Yeni-Malatyaspor last week, were unused substitutions in their first match against Goztepe.

It was in the 22nd round of the Turkish SuperLiga that ended with a 2-2 draw for Yeni-Malatyaspor against Goztepe. This was the first game for these Burundian boys who were on the 18-player squad list though, after the ninety minutes of the match, none of them set foot on the playing ground.

The lads came to this team after trials when Yeni-Malatyaspor was satisfied with the services of midfielder Yussuf Nyange Ndayishimiye for a year, thereafter selling him for 2.15 million euros to Istanbul Basaksehir. The team returned to Burundi to give trials to three young talented lads. Among the three players tried, Piclaire Irakoze from Olympic star was not as fortunate as his peers.

Uganda Drops Women’s U20 African Nation’s Volleyball Championship Hosting Rights

Uganda Drops Women’s U20 African Nation’s Volleyball Championship Hosting Rights

The Uganda Volleyball Federation, UVF has in a press release letter confirmed that they will not host the Women’s U20 African Nation’s Volleyball Championship.

The volleyball governing body has in a letter addressed to the volleyball family and press announced that they will not be able to host the upcoming CAVB calendar event supposed to be hosted by Uganda between 18th – 26th February.

In a letter addressed to UVF, the National Council of Sports required the federation to submit all the needed dossiers as stipulated for National Federations with interest to host any international sports fixtures or events with a deadline of 22nd January 2021 set to have all requirements.

The Executive noted that nothing substantial was in place as per the requirements from the National Council of Sports. With the yet to happen handover of office plus the global COVID-19 pandemic, the scheduled time window would not be enough to appropriately arrange the continental championship.

The federation will now intensify preparations for the national team to participate in the Women’s U20 African Nation’s Volleyball Championship in the newly selected host. It also pledges to bid for hosting rights in the future should the opportunity come up again.

UVF Needs More Time To Prepare As Hosts Of The U20 Tournament

U20 Tournament
Uganda U20

Uganda Volleyball Federation, UVF, has requested the continents volleyball governing to allow more time to better prepare for the Women’s African Nation’s Volleyball Championship U20 tournament.

The newly elected president Sadik Nasiwu of UVF wrote to CAVB requesting that there should be more time allowed for Uganda to prepare to host the U20 tournament. “In reference to the above, we are struggling to settle in the federation and the handover is very slow putting into consideration the tournament above is 2-weeks away. Coupled with requirements of hosting the event in my country,” said Sadik.

“We are requesting for the tournament to be postponed for at least two (2) months, but if it’s not possible it can be pushed to another country. Uganda remains committed to participating in this qualifiers.” He added in his letter to CAVB.

The Uganda Volleyball Federation recently elected a the fresh Board Of Administrators for the next 4-year tenure. For that matter, it is understandable that with only a couple of weeks remaining to reach the scheduled dates for the U20 tournament and various adjustments adopted due to COVID-19, the federation has requested that more time be given to it to prepare for the event.

CAVB experienced the same issue late last year where all activities had to be suspended owing to reasons of the pandemic and also the somewhat delayed handover of office to the new board. It would be coherent that the continents volleyball governing body gives UVF more time to prepare.

In statements on the CAVB websites, the body has so far confirmed Uganda, Egypt, and Madagascar to host the various events on their calendar. If Uganda pulls out, then a different country will have to take on the task.

Amavubi’s CHAN 2020 Journey Ends – Mashami Not Satisfied With The Refereeing.

Amavubi
Rwanda National Team, Amavubi

The Rwandan national team, Amavubi lost 1-0 to Guinea’s Sylli Nationale last night in CHAN 2020 Quarterfinal, in a two Red Card and VAR drama match.

Amavubi played more than 40 minutes against the 10 man Guinea after Mory Kante was sent off early in the game in the 11th minute following his challenge against Rwandan skipper Jacques Tuyisenge, who could not even continue the game.

7 minutes after the break, Rwanda’s Goal Keeper, Olivier Kwizera got sent off for fouling Guinea’s Yakouba Barry outside the box. Initially, he was given a yellow card but with Video Assistance Referee VAR, the Moroccan International referee, Samir Guazzaz, changed his mind and canceled the yellow and instead gave a straight Red Card to Mr. Kwizera. The decision coach Mashami did not agree with. The free-kick awarded against Amavubi in this situation led Rwanda to concede a goal. Morlaye Sylla scored for Sylli Nationale.

Following Olivier Kwizera’s dismissal, Coach Mashami said he was weakened by minor injuries and a red card on his Goalkeeper. “Of course we couldn’t achieve our goals, we cannot say we are happy, we are sad because we wanted to get to the next level and everything was possible,” he said.

The red card they got also affected us because we lost a player, a key player for us, and shortly we lose Rachid Kalisa which made us make quick changes. When you make quick changes it changes all your plans. We didn’t use an advantage to play against an incomplete team. Of course, I can’t ignore the fact that it was a great team, however, we deserved more than what they got,” the coach added.

At the foul, we got on the red card, if you look at the video, you can see that Olivier didn’t commit a foul to that player. But the player was very skilled, he played on the minds of the referees, he was smarter, they got a free-kick, and score it. You have to accept it, we have to accept it, we are not going to sue, and we are not going to sue VAR,” the coach continued.

Rwanda has participated 4 times in this competition designed exclusively for home-based players. Only in 2016 in Rwanda and 2021 in Cameroon, Rwanda has managed to reach the Quarterfinal stage twice in 2016 and 2021.

Mashami – ‘I wouldn’t say I’m a special coach, sometimes God remembers you!

Rwanda National Team head Coach Vincent Mashami says the win over the Hawks of TOGO to reach the quarterfinals will not make him a special coach, rather he thanks God for remembering his team.

Tuesday night, January 26, 2021, Amavubi led by head coach Mashami, in a historic win, advanced to the knockout stage of the CHAN Championship for the first time that this continental tournament has been played outside the Country. In this match, Rwanda had to come back from behind twice to earn a well-fought victory.

In the 45th minute of the game, Olivier Niyonzima canceled out Togo’s lead through a powerful header from Bayisenge’s well-taken free-kick. 14 minutes after the break, Togo took the led again but a minute later, the skipper, Jacques Tuyisenge scored a header to level the score.

Striker Ernest Sugira, who replaced Savio Nshuti in the second half, netted the winning goal for Amavubi in the 66th minute to secure the needed victory and send Amavubi to the quarter-finals. Rwanda finished second behind the defending champions Morocco in Group C. Togo and Uganda had to pack their bags and head back home.

In the post-match interview, the happy man, Vincent Mashami praised the efforts and fighting spirit of the whole team, support from the high administration the government, but first and foremost, the almighty for remembering him. Check the match Preview

“We are very happy, I thank the players so much for their efforts because it was not an easy game to prepare for. You know when you play against a team that has different ambitions from yours, it is not easy. Togo wanted a draw but on our side, it was a must-win game. Therefore, that is not easy when you meet an opponent like Togo, plus they are the best team tactically, it was not easy at all,” said Mashami.

“We have reason to be happy in this game. We always responded quickly, we wanted to score first but it did not work out for us as we were forced to make an early substitution for injured Thierry Manzi, Everything we planned immediately seemed to change. However, at the end of the day, we are happy because we have the win we fought for. I thank the boys, they stayed in control of the game, coming from behind twice against the well-organized team like this … I really thank them,” he added.

He continued, “I want to thank the whole Rwanda delegation here in Cameroon, but we also thank the government for their continued support.”

Even if the coach did not go into the tactics that led him to win the game in the post-match interview, it is very clear that this tactician had a good note on this match based on the impact of the substitutions made. However, he denied being sung as a hero of the game but rather praises God.

“The luck factor in football exists. I would not say I’m a special coach, because the situation we’ve been through isn’t the best. I would not say I’m an amazing coach, sometimes God remembers you. God remembered that we also need to be happy. With God’s help, the players had the strength to follow the instructions,” said coach Mashami.

Rwanda will have to wait for today’s games of Group D to find out their opponent in the quarter-finals.

Mashami admits Amavubi are heavily tasked to score goals for a Quarter Final slot

Mashami

Head coach Mashami accepts that his side, Amavubi needs to win today’s encounter with Togo for the slot in the quarter-finals of the CHAN championship.

Rwanda’s confirmed defensive-minded approach to the game will not help them much today as they are required to defeat Togo should a slot in the quarter-final be on their CHAN championship agenda. National team head coach, Vincent Mashami said in the Pre-game press conference that the third match of the group stage against Togo will be a do or die match.

“It’s a very decisive game ahead of us, our all-round performance has been good but we lack goals which are our main objective going into this game. We are aware of their qualities with or without the ball, we need to be in our best form so that we can nullify this team. We have given all the ingredients to the players to see if they can be more decisive in the final third and we believe we will score goals,” said Mashami.

The Rwandan National team, Amavubi last scored in the FIFA international matches on 19th October 2019 against Ethiopia 1-1 in Kigali which means that  Amavubi has not scored a goal in the previous seven recognized FIFA matches. It is a serious challenge for Mashami and his team who played a goalless draw in their last five games including the two they have already played in CHAN 2020, which is taking place in Cameroon.

According to reports from the camp, the coach will be playing today’s game without Bertrand Iradukunda, who picked up a knee injury in training. It is expected that Lague Byiringiro will replace him. No more changes are expected since the striker Ernest Sugira’s previous appearance against Morocco showed that he lacks fitness.

In Group C of Rwanda, all the teams still have the chance to qualify because in two rounds played, Morocco has 4 points, Togo has 3 points, Rwanda has 2 points, and Uganda has 1 point before the final round.

In the last edition in Morocco, Rwanda conceded a late goal against Libya at this stage, where a draw was enough to advance to the knockout stage. The fans and media ideally thought that Amavubi played an extremely defensive game.

In another game of Group C, Uganda will fight with Morocco at Stade de la Reunification in Douala. A draw will be enough for Morocco but Uganda needs to overcome their opponent to proceed to the quarter-finals. Uganda drew the first game against Rwanda before losing to Togo 2-1.

AMAVUBI Probable lineup against Togo: O. Kwizera (GK), F. Omborenga (RB), A. Mutsinzi (CB), T. Manzi (CB), E. Imanishimwe (LB), O. Niyonzima (DM), R. Kalisa (DM), L. Byiringiro (RM), M. Hakizimana (CAM), S. Nshuti (LM) and J. Tuyisenge (CF) in 4-2-3-1 formation.
