Bella Murekatete's double-double performance leads Rwanda to victory over Argentina.
In the presence of President Paul Kagame and First Lady Jeannette Kagame, the Rwandan women’s basketball team triumphed over Argentina and secured a spot in the semifinals of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 pre-qualifying tournament.
Following a bittersweet victory against Lebanon on matchday 1, Rwanda shocked Argentina, the world’s 31st-ranked team, on Wednesday night by holding them to 38 points.

Bella Murekatete was once again an outstanding player, posting a monstrous double-double of 18 points and 18 rebounds to help Dr. Sarr’s team defeat Argentina by 20 points (58-38).

This hard-fought win secures the home team’s place in the semifinals, making them second, following Senegal, which qualified with back-to-back victories against Hungary and Brazil.

Today, August 22, Murekatete and her teammates will play their final group stage game against Great Britain. If Rwanda wins, they will top Group D and avoid facing Senegal in the semis, the likely top seed from Group C.

The road to Germany is still long; however, Rwanda is making notable strides as they are facing non-African teams for the first time.

Bella Murekatete, who played a key role in Rwanda’s first victory over Lebanon, credited both the coach’s smart game plan and the enthusiastic fans for their success.

Rwanda beat Lebanon 80-62 in the opening game of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 pre-qualifying tournament. Bella Murekatete led the way with 24 points, 7 rebounds, and an assist.

During the interviews, while coach Dr. Sarr discussed what makes Rwanda a tough opponent, Murekatete added that the intense atmosphere created by the fans makes it very challenging for visiting teams.

She said, “We played Mali for friendly games, and you can’t hear anything the coach says or communicate with our teammates. The fans really make a really tough place for anybody else to come to play in.

“The hardcore fans sit right next to the opponent’s bench, and they don’t sit down unless it’s a timeout or something like a halftime. That’s a hard thing to do.”

She continued: “We really appreciate the fans and want them to fill the stadium for the next game on Wednesday, making it hard for Argentina to hear anything. This is our biggest advantage—we’re at home, we’re a good team, and we love our fans and want to excite them.”

“Come to the games and support us,” said Murekatete.

Murekatete, 24, is the first Rwandan-born player in NCAA Division I women’s basketball history and currently plays for the Washington State Cougars. She previously had a short training deal with the Phoenix Mercury.

Despite being one of the team’s youngest members, she adds valuable expertise since she has joined them for their Road to Berlin campaign.

On Wednesday at 8 p.m., Rwanda will compete against Argentina in a key Group D matchup. The result will determine the group leader and boost the chances of advancing to the semi-finals of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 PQT Rwanda.

Rwanda catches Lebanon off guard, tipping off the World Cup qualification journey with a victory

Rwanda
Rwanda’s Women’s National Basketball Team stunned Lebanon with an 80-62 victory in their first game of the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup pre-qualifying competition, boosting confidence for their upcoming match against Argentina on Wednesday.

In the presence of Rwanda’s new Sports Minister Richard Nyirishema, FIBA Africa President Anibal Manave, and the President of FIBA Foundation Hamane Niang, Rwanda did not disappoint over 5,000 spectators at BK Arena, who were cheering them on in their first-ever game against a non-African team.

Rwanda, led by Bella Murekatete—back with the team for the first time since 2021—took full advantage of Lebanon’s fouls, sinking 18 of 19 free throws in the first half and going into halftime with a 45-36 lead.

In the third quarter, the host team elected to emphasize driving to the basket and controlling the paint, with Murekatete and Hampton driving aggressively, taking full advantage of key Lebanese foul trouble, including captain Rebecca Akl. The quarter concluded 20–12 in favor of Rwanda.

The home team continued their dominance in the last quarter, winning all four quarters of the game and becoming the first team to register a big victory in Groups C and D, which are being hosted in Kigali.

Murekatete led all scorers with 24 points, shooting 7-of-9 field goals and 10-of-12 from the line in her first appearance since the 2021 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Qualifiers. Keisha Hampton scored 21 points, including nine three-pointers, while Sifa Ineza added 16 points.

They not only won all of the quarters, but they also dominated Lebanon in practically every aspect of the game. Rwanda outrebounded Lebanon 41-31, gained more points off turnovers (20-15), and scored 13 points in the fast break compared to Lebanon’s 8.

RBL : The Patriots beat APR and secured the No. 1 seed in the Playoffs.

RBL
The Patriots defeated APR BBC 77-70 on Friday night, achieving a double over the defending champions, clinching the top seed in the playoffs, and stretching their winning streak to 16 games in the 2024 Rwanda Basketball League (RBL).

As the final moments ticked away in their 77-70 victory over APR Basketball Club, jubilant Patriots Basketball Club fans celebrated a team that had transformed from finishing third last season to achieving the best record ever in the RBL.
In the 2024 Rwanda Basketball League, the Patriots went on a 16-game winning streak and secured the top spot in the regular season with two games still to play.

Among their 16 wins, the Henry Mwinuka-coached Patriots secured a double over the defending champions, APR. Last season, they had beaten APR twice during the regular season but were dramatically swept by them in the playoffs, finishing in third place.

Despite limited options on the bench, the Patriots, who last claimed the RBL title in 2020, worked hard to contain APR’s Isaiah Jaleel Miller in the paint. However, the American forward had an outstanding performance, scoring a game-high 25 points.

In a back-and-forth game that was decided in the final quarter, there was some controversy over Mazen Trackh’s decision to bench Aliou Diarra during the money time. It was during this crucial moment that the Patriots took the lead and secured the victory.

William Perry, who had been rested in a recent game against APR, led his team with 21 points, going 7-16 from the field and 4-11 from behind the arc. His performance helped the Patriots overcome a 7-point deficit and win by 7 points.

On his debut for the Patriots, Branch Stephaun contributed 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 assists, with half of his points coming in the final quarter while he was in foul trouble.

With this win, the Patriots have now defeated APR in both regular-season encounters for two consecutive seasons. And with two games remaining, the playoff seeds for the RBL are set.

As the top seed, the Patriots will face the fourth-seeded Kepler in the playoffs. Kepler secured the last playoff spot on Friday after Espoir lost to REG BBC.

REG BBC will compete against APR in the second playoff matchup, a rematch of the 2023 finals.

The first round of the playoffs of the playoffs (semi-finals) will be a best-of-five series, with the winners advancing to the finals, where a best-of-seven series will determine the 2024 RBL champions.

APR’s Axel Mpoyo knocks down 10 threes against the Titans

Mpoyo
APR’s power forward Axel Mpoyo delivered an outstanding performance, scoring an impressive 30 points solely from three-pointers in their 101-69 victory over the Titans in a RBL game.

At LDK Gymnasium on June 21st, APR Basketball Club secured an emphatic 32-point victory over the K Titans in the Rwanda Basketball League, leaving their opponents devastated and propelling themselves to the top of the league just ahead of the Patriots’ upcoming match against Kepler tomorrow.

Defending champions APR Basketball showed no mercy to the struggling K Titans, handing them a decisive 101-69 defeat at Lycée de Kigali. Initially slow, APR allowed their opponents to score easily, conceding a total of 22 points in the first quarter.

However, coached by Mazen Trakh, APR bounced back in the second quarter, taking a 7-point lead into halftime (22-22, 25-18).

The K Titans, struggling with a 1-11 record including a forfeit, couldn’t keep up with APR’s pace in the third quarter, scoring only 18 points compared to APR’s 27. The momentum continued in the final quarter as APR scored another 27 points while limiting the K Titans to just 11, sealing their victory with a convincing 101-69 score line.

In his 27 minutes on the court, Rwanda international power forward Axel Mpoyo led APR with 30 points, all of them coming from three-pointers. Mpoyo made 10 threes out of 18 attempts, contributing significantly to his team’s fifth consecutive league win.

On the opposing side, Kurt Douglass Hall Jr. of the K Titans scored a game-high 35 points on 14-32 field goals.

APR BBC remains undefeated in the Rwanda Basketball League since March 20, when they suffered a 73-59 loss to the Patriots, halting a streak of 14 consecutive wins. They now boast a five-game winning streak and hold an overall record of 11-1 in the league.

The Titans are teetering on the brink of relegation, currently sitting 9th out of 10 teams in the league standings.

Today’s victory secures APR’s first-place position, pending the outcome of tomorrow’s game between the Patriots and Kepler at LDK Gymnasium. Depending on that result, Mpoyo’s APR could move to second place unless the Patriots forfeit.

The competition for the top four spots in the Rwanda Basketball League is heating up, with only four teams advancing to the playoffs to determine the league champions.

The APR Volleyball teams have been crowned as the champions of the 2024 Rwanda National League

APR Volleyball
APR Volleyball teams are 2024 Rwanda National League Champions
APR Volleyball Clubs emerged as the champions of the 2024 Rwanda Volleyball National League in both the Men’s and Women’s categories. They secured their titles after intense battles in the third game of the best-of-three series against Kepler and Police VC respectively.

KIGALI, May 26, The APR Volleyball family surpassed all expectations by securing the National League championships this year. Despite being the lowest-seeded team in the playoffs, the men’s team defied the odds to clinch the series victory. Meanwhile, the women’s team dominated the regular season and continued their flawless journey by claiming victory in the playoffs.

In the men’s category, the APR Volleyball Club finished fourth in the regular season, securing the last spot in the 2024 National League ahead of defending champions Gisagara. Against all expectations, Sam Muligye’s APR team eliminated the top-seeded REG in a clean sweep of the best-of-three series to advance to the Playoff finals.

Their journey to the championship required rigorous preparation to face Fidel Nyirimana’s Kepler, who had eliminated the strong Police VC in the semifinals in their debut season. Nyirimana, a four-time league champion, posed a serious threat to APR, especially after strengthening their squad with Ghanaian outside hitter Hassan Umar prior to the playoffs.

Although APR initially fell short against Kepler in the first game, losing 3-1, they bounced back in the second game to secure a thrilling five-set victory, forcing a deciding game on Sunday.

As per the theory, the outcome of the second match often determines the best-of-three series winner. APR capitalized on their momentum from Saturday’s game to prepare for the championship game as they took the first two sets convincingly (25-19, 25-23), setting the stage for an intense final set.

Despite Kepler’s determined efforts, winning the third set 25-22 and aiming to reverse the tide in the fourth set, APR remained resolute. Aware of the challenge posed by letting the opponent come from two sets behind, they fought fiercely to maintain their lead.

Regardless of playing with a hip injury, APR’s setter Paul Akan played a crucial role in preventing Kepler from staging a comeback. His connection with Theoneste Gatsinzi proved instrumental in APR’s successful season, particularly in the playoff series.

APR ultimately clinched the championship by winning the thrilling third set 29-27, ending their four-year hiatus and emerging victorious in this year’s championship.

Similarly in the women’s category, the APR Women’s Volleyball Club, who breezed past Ruhango in the semifinals, faced a significant challenge against Police, who had defeated them in the regular season.

Led by the experienced Christian Hatumimana, Police entered the final series on a positive note after a convincing 3-0 victory against the regular season leaders, APR. However, the lionesses of APR rallied strongly in the second and third games to clinch the well-deserved 2024 National League titles, sparking celebrations at the Ministry of Defense as both their teams secured the league titles.

With a squad comprising entirely local players, under the guidance of Peter Kamasa and Yvette Igihozo, both Rwandans, APR WVC fought fiercely in the four set game (27-25, 26-24, 14-25, 29-27) to overcome Police and reclaim the title lost in the previous season to RRA.

APR Volleyball
REG VC claimed third place by defeating Police VC 2-1 in a best-of-three series.

APR VC, Kepler, and REG VC in the men’s division will represent Rwanda in the Africa Club Championship in May 2025, while APR WVC and Police WVC will fly the country’s flag in the women’s competition.

Looking ahead, the Genocide Memorial Tournament is scheduled for next weekend, with teams from abroad invited to participate.

In the women’s category of the National Volleyball League playoff finals, APR Volleyball Club will compete against Police Volleyball Club.

APR
Police WVC secured their spot in the finals by eliminating the defending champions, RRA, in the semi-finals.

BAL Playoffs Will Not Feature A Team From Rwanda

BAL
APR, Rwanda's representative in the 2024 BAL season
The BAL playoffs are set to take place at Kigali’s BK Arena for the fourth consecutive year and feature eight top African teams. However, Rwanda will not participate in the competition for the first time since its inception.

From May 24 to June 1, the 2024 Basketball Africa League Playoffs will unfold at Kigali’s BK Arena. Seven teams are poised to challenge Egypt’s Al Ahly, who are striving to defend their title and etch their names in history.

On May 24, the eight qualified teams from three conferences will compete in seeding games to determine their playoff opponents.

FUS Rabat and Petro de Luanda represent the Kalahari Conference, while Al Ahly (Cairo) and Al Ahly (Benghazi) represent the Nile Conference.

Rivers Hoopers and AS Douanes represent the Sahara Conference, while the best third-ranked teams, US Monastir from the Sahara Conference and Cape Town Tigers from the Kalahari Conference, have also advanced.

APR, Rwanda’s representative in the 2024 BAL, concluded the Sahara Conference games with 2 wins and 4 losses, finishing at the bottom and getting eliminated.

APR Basketball Club began preparations in December last year, assembling the roster and necessary staff. They later held a 10-day training camp in Doha, Qatar, before hosting numerous international friendlies in Kigali. However, the real test in Dakar revealed the team’s unreadiness.

Since the league’s inception in 2021, Rwanda has consistently hosted the playoffs, but for the first time, the land of thousand hills won’t be represented in the BAL playoffs.

In less than 10 days, the qualified teams will converge in Kigali to commence the postseason games. Among them, only Petro de Luanda has participated in every playoff. Carlos Morais will captain Petro de Luanda for the fourth time. Under his guidance, the team has consistently reached the semifinals since 2021.

Egyptian champions Al Ahly will strive to become the first team to successfully defend the Basketball Africa League title. However, they face a formidable challenge, as the eight competing teams hail from three separate conferences for the first time.

The Rivers Hoopers’ victory over APR secures their spot in the playoffs.

Peter Olisemeka delivered an outstanding performance against APR, securing a double-double with 17 points and 19 rebounds. His stellar play was instrumental in Rivers Hoopers' qualification for the playoffs.
Rivers Hoopers triumph over APR with a 78-71 victory after a gripping second overtime, securing their place in the 2024 BAL playoffs. This significant victory not only distinguishes them as the first team from the Sahara Conference to advance to the 2024 BAL Playoffs but also marks them as the first Nigerian team to qualify for the BAL playoffs

Today, on May 11, the Rivers Hoopers, Nigeria’s representative in the 2024 Basketball Africa League, clinched a playoff berth by defeating Rwanda’s representative APR in their fifth Sahara Conference game at the Dakar Arena.

Against the odds, the Rivers Hoopers entered the conference as underdogs but triumphed, winning four out of five games, including two impressive victories over the Rwandan Champions, APR Basketball Club.

APR approached this game well-aware of William Perry’s offensive prowess, prompting Mazen Trakh to make a rare alteration to his starting lineup for the first time this season. Nshobozwabyosenumukiza was inserted to bolster the perimeter defense against Rivers Hoopers’ William Perry.

After a strong start by Rwanda’s army side, they faced a setback when their leading scorer, Noel Obadiah, suffered an injury early in the game, sidelining him for the remainder of the match. Despite Obadiah’s absence, Mazen Trakh’s team managed to maintain a narrow lead, concluding the first quarter with a score of 19-16.

However, their challenges continued as APR encountered another injury setback in the second quarter, with Adonis Filer injuring his right Achilles’ tendon. With both Obadiah and Filer off the court, Nshobozwa, Ntore, and Captain Williams stepped up to handle the ball responsibilities.

Mpoyo’s layup extended their lead to 24-21, but Kelvin Amayo’s three-pointer leveled the score at 24-24. A quick succession of three-pointers from Williams and Mpoyo pushed APR to a six-point lead, prompting a timeout from Ogoh Odaudu.

The timeout revitalized the Nigerian team, with Peter Olisemeka’s alley-oop dunk followed by Kelvin Amayo’s three-pointer narrowing the deficit to just one point.

Olisemeka then delivered another stunning dunk, giving the Rivers Hoopers a lead just before halftime, with the score at 31-30.

APR remained focused on their primary objective in the third quarter, which is neutralizing William Perry’s influence on the Rivers Hoopers’ offensive plays. Perry, who had only attempted one shot in the first 27 minutes of the game, found himself effectively contained by APR’s defensive efforts.

With Perry contained, APR seized control of the game and executed their offensive plays with ease. Five minutes into the third quarter, Ntore Habimana sank his first three-pointer of the season after eight unsuccessful attempts. However, the Rivers Hoopers faced further adversity when Devine Eke collected his fourth personal foul two minutes later.

With both Perry and Eke sidelined, the Rivers Hoopers struggled to generate offense, providing an opportune moment for Rwanda’s Army side to extend their lead.

APR capitalized on this opportunity, scoring 20 points in the quarter. Notably, Nshobozwa and Ntore contributed 16 points between them, with each player scoring eight points. As a result, APR entered the final period with a commanding nine-point lead, 50-41.

In the final quarter, the Rivers Hoopers came out with a fierce determination to not only erase the deficit but also win and secure a spot in the playoffs.

Within the first four minutes, they managed to narrow the gap and assert their dominance in the paint against APR. However, the tide turned when William Robeyns fouled out with just 1:41 remaining on the clock.

Despite this setback, Kevine Eke rose to the occasion, sinking a crucial two-point basket to tie the game at 58 and push it into overtime. Throughout this crucial quarter, both Devine Eke and Peter Olisemeka contributionon both ends of the court, highlighting their hunger to secure a playoff berth and etch their names in Nigerian basketball history.

The Nigerian team surged ahead with rapid offensive transitions, swiftly building a six-point lead within the first two minutes, extending it to seven points within three minutes. However, APR mounted a comeback, narrowing the deficit to just two points in the final two minutes of play.

In a remarkable turn of events, they managed to tie the score within a minute, setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the game. 65-65

In the decisive second overtime, the Nigerian team dominated, scoring 13 points while only allowing 6 points from their opponents, securing a crucial victory and advancing to the playoffs.

In the second game, US Monastir emerged victorious with a 75-69 win over AS Douanes, securing the second spot in the rankings.

APR and AS Douanes find themselves in the bottom two positions in the rankings. Their upcoming match will be a crucial showdown, as both teams vie for a playoff spot in a do-or-die scenario.

Tomorrow’s games will hold significant weight in determining the second slot in the standings, as well as potentially securing the best third place. US Monastir is set to take on Rivers Hoopers, while APR will clash with AS Douanes.
