FIFA Women’s Ranking: Rwanda Slips, Nigeria Tops Africa

Rwanda’s Women’s National Football Team dropped two places in the latest FIFA Women’s Ranking, falling from 166th to 168th globally and ranking 34th in Africa, while Nigeria retained its position as the continent’s top team after winning the Africa Cup of Nations.

The world governing body of football, FIFA, released the updated standings on August 7 from Zurich, with Spain ousting the USA to reclaim first place in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Ranking.

In this Coca-Cola–sponsored ranking, Rwanda, coached by Cassa Mbungo, maintained 892.39 points from the previous month as they played no matches. This inactivity caused their drop from 166th to 168th globally and 34th in Africa.

Other African teams actively competed in the Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco, boosting their rankings.

Nigeria, the reigning African champions, leads the continent and ranks 36th globally with 1,630.83 points. South Africa follows as second in Africa and 54th globally with 1,465.57 points.

Finalists Morocco rank third in Africa and 64th globally with 1,407.21 points, while Zambia is fourth in Africa and 65th globally with 1,402.28 points.

Cameroon ranks fifth in Africa and 66th globally with 1,396.2 points.

In the CECAFA region, Ethiopia leads the pack, ranking 20th in Africa and 128th globally. Tanzania follows closely, positioned 22nd in Africa and 131st worldwide.

Kenya holds the 24th spot in Africa and 140th globally, while Uganda ranks 29th in Africa and 147th globally.

Rwanda is the fifth-ranked CECAFA team, placing 34th in Africa and 168th worldwide

Globally, Spain’s five-win streak leading up to the final of UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 helped them reclaim the top ranking, pushing the USA to second after it had held first place since August 2024.

Sweden holds third place, England fourth, Germany fifth, and France, which climbed four spots, is sixth.

The biggest climber in the rankings is Bangladesh, which jumped 24 places from 128th to 104th, while Mongolia experienced the largest drop, falling 22 places from 126th to 148th.

Rwanda’s current 168th position is its lowest ranking in history, with its best-ever ranking being 105th on December 15, 2017.

The next FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Ranking update is scheduled for December 11, 2025.
