AfroBasket 2025 Shock — South Sudan Falls to Guinea’s Deadly Trio.

Alpha Diallo, Mamadi Diakite, and Souleyman Boum Jr. combined for 58 points to power Guinea’s 88–80 upset over top-ranked South Sudan, answering every Bright Stars rally with clutch shots.

 

MOÇÂMEDES, NAMIBE — Guinea pulled off the first major upset of AfroBasket 2025, defeating top-ranked South Sudan 88–80 in the opening game of Group C.

Alpha Diallo led all scorers with 28 points, while former NBA champion Mamadi Diakite added 16 points in just 19 minutes before fouling out. Souleyman Boum Jr. contributed 14 points, making the trio responsible for a combined 58 points.

South Sudan, known for their defense, struggled against Guinea’s hot three-point shooting from the start, trailing 29–20 after the first quarter.

The Bright Stars tried to halt Guinea’s momentum in the second quarter but still went into halftime down 45–38.

Guinea pulled away in the third quarter 24–21 and held on in the final period, outscoring South Sudan 88–80.

Nuni Omot was flawless for South Sudan, scoring 27 points on 8-of-8 field goals and 11-of-11 free throws in 28 minutes.

The Syli’s three-point mastery was a key factor, hitting 14-of-28 from beyond the arc, while South Sudan’s six third-quarter turnovers compounded their troubles.

The result marks one of AfroBasket 2025’s biggest early shocks, throwing Group C wide open.

Guinea will face hosts Angola in their second game, while South Sudan takes on Libya on August 15 at Kilamba Arena.
