AfroBasket Women: Rwanda Suffers 72-55 Defeat to Mozambique, Faces Qualification Playoff.

AfroBasket
Rwanda suffered a second straight defeat at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, losing 72-55 to Mozambique in their final Group D game on July 27 at Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The loss confirms a bottom-of-the-group finish for the Land of a Thousand Hills, meaning they miss out on direct qualification to the quarterfinals and must now face the second-placed team from Group C in a do-or-die playoff for a spot in the last eight.

After a heavy opening-day defeat to reigning champions Nigeria, Dr. Cheikh Sarr’s side returned to action against one of continental powerhouses Mozambique but fell short once again—this time by 17 points.

Destiney Philoxy Promise scored a game-high 15 points.

Rwanda, who finished fourth in the previous edition and qualified automatically for this year’s tournament, will now have one final chance to stay in contention.
